Share

There is a little over a week to go until the Cape Town skies will be an abundance of colour as hundreds of kitesurfers from around the world take to the water and air in attempt to set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™. 29 to 31 January 2016(wind waiting period) will see the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada South Africa in association with WeChat bring together the kitesurfing community and industry from around the world to the shores of Tableview for an action packed day of kitesurfing, entertainment and fundraising for local and international charities.

The record will be for the “Largest Parade of Kitesurfers” currently held by Spain with 353 kiters. Cape Town is looking to rally close to 400 kitesurfers to comfortably set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™. The field will consist of locals and foreigners, amateurs and pros including the whole field of the Red Bull King of the Air contestants - another international event which has found a home in Cape Town. It will be an opportunity for kiting enthusiasts to enjoy the sport along side some of the very best in the world including five time World Champion and current Red Bull King of the Air Champion Aaron Hadlow(UK).

The main reason for running Virgin Kitesurfing Armada events is to raise valuable funds for some fantastic local and international charities. At the forthcoming event in Cape Town, all funds raised will be supporting three fantastic charities: Internationally it will be supporting Virgin Unite’s work with entrepreneurs and communities in developing countries and in the UK, the youth charity Snow-Camp’s work with disadvantaged inner city young people. In Cape Town, funds raised will be supporting the work of innovative local Community Development Programme the Save Foundation. Save Foundation is a registered non-profit organization that works to enrich, educate, and empower various township and settlement communities, as well as protect and rehabilitate wildlife in areas of Africa. In addition to the educational projects, SAVE has also developed numerous Sport and Youth Development programs as an incentive program for youth to continue with their education and become ambitious contributing members of society. Under this umbrella exist the Swim, Surf, Skate, and Kite Project. The goal of the sport projects is to promote physical activity as a positive outlet for the children’s energy, as well as build self-confidence in conquering a new skill. SAVE believes that this will help to steer these youth away from negative influences within the community, such as crime and substance use. Through these programs, there are opportunities for employment and further involvement in these sport industries. For example, dedicated participants may become involved in apprenticeships to learn how to shape their own boards or further their knowledge in swimming and lifesaving practices to become a lifeguard, etc.

Kitesurfing Armada events would not be possible without the backing of local and international brands. Virgin has given their support and encouragement and been hugely positive, their experience in delivering and promoting events has been invaluable. Naturally, having the personal support of Sir Richard Branson also adds a great deal to the event and we are looking forward to having Sir Richard’s backing for the Cape Town event this year.

WeChat are the major sponsor for the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada South Africa 2016. WeChat is a free messaging and calling app that allows you to easily connect with family and friends across countries. We will be using WeChat across the event to connect everyone and communicate updates! The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada South Africa also has a tremendous amount of support from the City of Cape Town, Dolphin Beach Hotel, Van Hunks Boarding and the South African Kitesurfing Association. The local kitesurfing industry have also all committed their support to the event.
